Caryn Elaine Johnson was born on November 13, 1955 in New York, NY. She went to St Columba’s, a local Catholic school in the Chelsea-Elliot area.

Whoopi dropped out of high school and lived in East Germany for a period, working in theater performances. She then relocated to Berkeley and pursued odd jobs such as waitressing and bricklaying.

She joined the Blake Street Hawkeyes theatrical group and taught comedy and acting lessons while performing in numerous theater plays.

The Career Of Whoopi Goldberg

In 1982, she made her film debut in Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away. In 1983, Whoopi Goldberg produced a one-woman show called Whoopi Goldberg, which consisted of many character monologues, and the production was performed on Broadway.

It has 156 performances. Her second big break came in 1985, when Steven Spielberg cast her as Cecile, the starring character in The Color Purple. The film was a critical and economic triumph, and it was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Goldberg.

Whoopi finally found her stride in the 1990s, beginning with her role as a psychic in Ghost, co-starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. That role earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming her only the second black woman to do so.

Following that, Goldberg appeared in two Star Trek films until Sister Act was released in 1992. That picture grossed over $200 million, and Goldberg received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance.

Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit saw her reprise her role. In 1994, she became the first African American woman to host the Academy Awards. Her other significant films from the 1990s include Corrina, Corrina, and The Little Rascals.

Whoopi was very successful in the 2000s, appearing in films like as How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Girl, Interrupted, and others. From 1998 to 2004, she co-produced Hollywood Squares. Whoopi has also appeared in various episodes of the Star Trek franchise.
