Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) Manifesto Committee Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has come out forcefully in support of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer after he promised to do away with the divisive E-Levy.
If elected in the general elections of 2024, Dr. Bawumia promised to abolish the betting tax and the E-Levy during the NPP’s manifesto unveiling on Sunday, August 19, in Takoradi.
Dr. Bawumia has come under fire from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for not supporting the elimination of the E-Levy during his tenure in the current administration.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah supported Dr. Bawumia in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, pointing out that before to the E-Levy’s adoption, he had opposed digital payment taxes. He contended that it was unrealistic to anticipate the Vice President publicly opposing the policy as soon as it was approved.
The Minister of Information, Oppong Nkrumah, claimed that there is no contradiction between Dr. Bawumia’s pledge to do away with the E-Levy and its present application. He reassured Ghanaians that Dr. Bawumia would keep his word if elected, and he urged them to have faith in his commitment.
“The Vice President Dr Bawumia, even before the E-levy was introduced, was clear on his position about taxing digital payments. I have been on record saying that when the matter came before the cabinet, he expressed his principal opposition to it. But in the end, the cabinet took a particular position.
Oppong Nkrumah emphasized, saying, “It will be foolish of him, as the Vice President in office, to come and hold a news conference and declare that he is at odds with my government’s position. Although he voiced his opinion, we are all accountable for the actions taken at the table.
“He has therefore now said that if you make him the man in charge in 2025, that principal position that he has, he’s going to establish it by ensuring that this E-levy and other revenue lines that he considers unnecessary will be taken off. There’s no discrepancy between the two.”
