During a Copa Libertadores encounter in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, an Argentinos Juniors defender sustained a complete dislocation of his left knee.

Luciano Sanchez, 29, was seriously injured after being tackled by experienced left-back Marcelo, who is now playing for Fluminense in Brazil. His colleagues first thought he’d fractured his leg, but a medical assessment released by the club revealed that it was a complete dislocation.

As the Argentinian yelled on the pitch, surrounded by worried players from both sides, the former Real Madrid star was sent off in tears. The event occurred in the 56th minute of the game, which ended 1-1.

Local media say doctors at the Sanatorio Finochietto hospital estimated Sanchez’s recovery time between eight and 12 months due to the incident.

‘I lived a very tough moment on the pitch today,’ Marcelo said on social media. ‘With no intention I injured a fellow footballer. I want to wish you the best possible recovery, Luciano Sanchez.’

Argentinos Juniors thanked the Brazilian club and the footballer for their concern for Sánchez.
