If approved, Ghana’s Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has pledged to abolish the betting tax in his first budget.
The doctor appeared before the House Select Committee on Monday, January 13. Ato Forson said the current betting tax has not achieved its objectives and should be abolished.
“I am committed to abolishing the betting tax, and I plan to remove it in my first budget as Finance Minister because it is ineffective.”
He explained that the tax has not generated the expected revenue and has placed significant pressure on the betting industry without helping the economy as a whole.
In addition to his position on the betting tax, Dr. Forson reiterated his opposition to the controversial e-levy.
He said his view on the tax remains the same, and he will strive to create a sustainable and effective tax base that promotes economic development while reducing unnecessary burdens on the public.
Dr. Forson’s words reflect his commitment to overhauling Ghana’s tax system to promote sustainable economic development and address issues important to individuals and businesses.
Who Is Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson
Cassiel Ato Forson is a Ghanaian politician and has been a member of Parliament since 2009. Forson first entered the Fifth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana before retaining his seat in the Sixth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, the Fourth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, and the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
A former National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate representing the Ajumaku-Enyan-Esam constituency of the Central Region on the ticket. In 2013, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Finance.
On January 23, 2024, he succeeded Haruna Idrisou as Minority Leader of the Ghanaian Parliament.
