In an interview with Hertilicious of Empire Fm in Takoradi, Kofi Bruce decried the recent loss of music’s distinctiveness to other sounds.
“Everyone is doing an amazing job and providing their quota to support highlife music in Ghana,” he says, but he believes that selling our indigenous sound, highlife, is insufficient.
Highlife has spawned a slew of excellent artists, like Amakye Dede, Paapa Yankson, C.K Mann, Kofi Bentil, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, and a slew of others who have successfully represented Ghana through the genre.
After these highlife legends, the ‘Martha Matter’ crooner believes we have lost our highlife identity to Afrobeat and these new genres.
When asked what he can do to keep our indigenous sound alive, he replied that he is here to save highlife through his music.
Kofi Bruce is a Ghanaian musician who describes his genre of music as ‘Palmwine Music’. He hails from Takoradi, Western Region, and takes inspiration from Folk Music, Highlife, Soul, Jazz, and many more.
