Additionally, it made the top 30 in Australia and Ireland and peaked at #2 on the UK charts. The singles “Let the Sun Shine,” “Earthquake” (with Tinie Tempah), “Last Time,” “Express Yourself,” “Treatment,” and “Let It Be” have all been successful for Labrinth.

His biggest hit, “Beneath Your Beautiful” (with Emeli Sande), received Platinum certifications in the UK, 3x Platinum certifications in Australia, and 2x Platinum certifications in New Zealand. In the UK, Ireland, and Scotland, it likewise peaked at number one.

Early Life

Labrinth, whose full name is Timothy Lee McKenzie, was one of nine siblings born on January 4, 1989, in London, England. He has Jamaican ancestry. He and his siblings started a band called Mac 9 when they were young. McKenzie received his education at Stoke Newington School, where he also started pursuing a musical career. His brother Mac introduced him to studio recording when he was 15 years old.

Career Beginnings

McKenzie began his career in the music business as a co-producer on Master Shortie’s 2009 album “A.D.H.D.” McKenzie now performs under the name Labrinth. Guy Moot, an official with EMI Music Publishing, became aware of his work and made him an offer. After that, Labrinth mentored the Urban Development Vocal Collective, many of whose songs he had produced.

Rise to Fame

Labrinth had his breakthrough year in 2010. In February, he appeared as an uncredited guest on rapper Tinie Tempah’s number-one hit debut single “Pass Out,” which he also produced and co-wrote. Later in the year, Labrinth reunited with Tempah as a featured artist on the single “Frisky,” which debuted at number two in the UK. Throughout 2010, Labrinth also wrote material for such artists as Loick Essien and Professor Green. Due to his success, he was eventually signed to Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Music, through which he released his debut single “Let the Sun Shine.” The song debuted at number three in the UK.

Studio Albums

Labrinth continued his success in 2012 with his debut studio album, “Electronic Earth.” Reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart, it spawned the hit UK singles “Earthquake,” “Last Time,” and “Beneath Your Beautiful,” plus the previously released “Let the Sun Shine.” Also in 2012, Labrinth released the EP “Atomic” for free download on SoundCloud. His next studio album, “Imagination & the Misfit Kid,” came out in late 2019; it features guest appearances by Zendaya and Sia. For his work, Labrinth earned two Emmy Award nominations, winning for the single “All for Us.” He later returned to score the second season of “Euphoria” in 2022, and received two more Emmy nominations.

In his other soundtrack work, Labrinth co-wrote and produced the original song “Spirit” from Disney’s 2019 remake of “The Lion King.” Sung by Beyoncé, the track charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and received Grammy and Golden Globe Award nominations. In 2021, Labrinth reunited with “Euphoria” star Zendaya to compose the score to her Netflix film “Malcolm & Marie.”
