The Government of Ghana has hit on extending the SHS Education from 3 to 6 according to the Minister of Education.

The minister of Education, Honorable Yaw Osei Adutwum has made it clear to Ghanaians about the plans of the government about the educational sector. According to the minister, the government will from the 2023 academic year make Senior high schools in Ghana a six-year scheme, meaning they are planning on extending the SHS education from 3 to 6years.

“In 2023 when we open those schools, you are going to see how we are going to see six years of quality secondary education,” he said.

According to the minister of Education, this will be cost-effective for the country and this will make the senior high education in Ghana very quality.

He also added that new 15 schools have been awarded a contract to bring on board various junior high schools together and make it a full high school of six years and not three years. This means one will enter high school right after primary 6.

Aside from the senior high school education reforms, the minister also made it clear that a number of junior high schools will be merged together as one and put under these 15 new schools.

He stated that there are 13,000 Junior high schools in Ghana but when this program is initiated, it will reduce the number of Junior high schools in Ghana to just 2,500. According to him, these plans of the government will take effect in 2021 if all things go well as planned.

The minister made this revelation to the press on Tuesday, 14th December 2021.
