10. St. Augustine College

St. Augustine College is noted as one of the top 10 most stubborn SHS in Ghana. It is an all-male school situated in the Central Region of Ghana, Cape Coast. In 1930, the school started in a village in Elmina known as Amisano.

The school happens to be one of the best schools in Ghana in terms of education, sport, and many more. Alumni of this institution is called “St. Augustine’s Past Student Union”. St. Augustine’s College, popularly known as “AUGUSCO”, calls its old students “APSUNIANS”.

St. Augustine’s College are a two-time winner of the National Science and Mathematics Quiz. Winners in 2007 and 2019. The motto of the college is Omnia Vincit Labor, meaning “Perseverance conquers All”.

9. St. John’s School

St. John’s School is an all-boys’ second-cycle Roman Catholic located at Sekondi in the Western Region of Ghana. It is one of the best senior high schools in Ghana and the best in the region. Old Boys of St. John’s School are affectionately called Old Saints. The Old Saints Fraternity includes some of the most notable and prominent men in the country.

Old boys include award-winning Ghanaian journalist, communications expert and social entrepreneur David Ampofo, Dr Frank Abu former minister of Mines and Energy, former Chief Executive of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Felix Anyah, M.K Onnomah, Ghanaian Politician and the late Major Maxwell Adam Mahama, Shasha Marley and a whole group of prominent and notable alumni.

8. Accra Academy

The Accra Academy is one of the foremost secondary educational institutions in Ghana and operates as a non-denominational day and boarding boys’ school, located at Bubuashie, near Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region. It was the first private academy to be established in the Gold Coast.

Accra Academy was ranked 8th out of the top 100 best high schools in Africa-by-Africa Almanac in 2003, based upon quality of education, student engagement, strength and activities of alumni, school profile, internet and news visibility.

The academy maintains a high academic standard and has over the years been ranked among the best performing senior high schools in Ghana. In 2009, the academy was listed among six other schools in the Greater Accra Region, which had 60% or more of its candidates qualifying for tertiary education. 7. St. Paul’s college

St. Paul’s Senior High School or St. Paul’s Boys College is a Ghanaian boys’ senior high school located at Hatsukope -Denu in the Ketu South Municipal District of the Volta Region. This school appears to be one of the top 10 most stubborn SHS in Ghana. It was formerly known as the St. Paul’s Secondary. Established in 1958, it is a Catholic school that is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Keta–Akatsi and has a minor seminary attached to it.

The school has the nickname SPACO derived from its name, however, the alumni (the old students’ union) call themselves Conquerors after the school motto, (‘Do good and conquer evil Vince In Bono Malum’). In the year 2000 the school was made a mixed school to promote girl child education in the Volta Region. After the first batch completed the school was turned again to boys’ school and has till date remained a boy’s school.

Kumasi Technical Institute is a coeducational second-cycle technical school in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The school was established in 1976 with support from the government of Ghana.

In 2009, at least 12 boys sustained severe injures after final year student staged a violent demonstration on the institute campus on Sunday evening. According to the student, the demonstration was a result of an attack on a final year student by a teacher for wearing an “non-prescribed” uniform.

5. Opoku Ware School

Opoku Ware School, often referred to as OWASS, is a public Catholic senior high school for boys, located in Santasi, a suburb of Kumasi, which is the capital of the Ashanti region of Ghana. It was established in 1952, is an all-boys Catholic boarding school in Kumasi, Ghana. The school was named after the Asante King, Otumfuo Opoku Ware I.

The motto of the school is a Latin phrase “Deus Lux Scientiae” which means “God is the Light of Knowledge” whilst “Akatakyie” the slogan is an Asante word meaning “Conquering Heroes”. Its alumni are known collectively as Akatakyie, an Asante word meaning “Conquering Heroes”. OWASS has its official colour as blue and yellow, and have won the National Science and Maths Quiz for 1997 and 2002.

4. Kumasi High School

Kumasi High School, often referred to as KUHIS, is a boys’ senior high school in the Ashanti region of Ghana. KUHIS is well known as one of the top 10 most stubborn SHS in Ghana. It was established in 1962, by S. K. Amoah. The students are known collectively as Mmerantee (Gentlemen).

It was formerly known as the Kwame Nkrumah Secondary School, situated at Asuoyeboah it was relocated to Gyinyase under the new name Kumasi High School. Their motto is Truth conquers.

3. Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary

Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary (formerly St John’s Seminary and College, nicknamed POJOSS), is an all-boys boarding school, located at Effiduase, Koforidua, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It was established in 1958 by Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers SVD as a Catholic seminary for boys who wished to become priests.

Students are offered courses such as general arts, general science, business and visual arts to pursue and after their stay in the school, sit an external examination called the West African Senior School Certificate Examination to be placed in any of the tertiary institutions in the country.

The students of the school are usually referred to as Pojomma while the alumni are addressed as Pojoba, to which they respond Daasebre. Since its establishment in 1958, the school has achieved many successes and has produced great men for Ghana and the world over. There are 2100 boys in the school.

Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary maintains a very high academic standard and has over the years distinguished itself in the areas of Science, Business, and Arts. In 2012, the school placed 9th on the WASSCE order of merit (Education in Koforidua), and has emerged victorious in many inter-school academic competitions.

The school recently reached the quarter-finals of the National Science and Maths Quiz Competition. They have won the Ashanti regional Milo soccer competition in 2005 and 2015.

In the Zonal Inter Colleges Athletics competition, they have won several times. Students of the school were claimed to have created ‘a touchless bin’ in the fight against COVID-19. They also were the first school to win the maiden Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge, 2021.

The College is one of the oldest senior high schools in Africa, and was ranked 10th out of the top 100 best high schools in Africa-by-Africa Almanac in 2003, based on quality of education, student engagement, strength and activities of alumni, school profile, internet and news visibility.

It is the second-oldest secondary school in Ghana after Mfantsipim School, an arch rival which was established by the Methodist Church in 1876. Adisco is also one of the most famous institutions of learning in sub-Saharan Africa. They are winners of the 2016 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz and 2021 National Robotics Championship.
