NPP’s Ernest Kumi, Akwatia MP, Dead at 40 Following Court Controversy
The death of Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, hit Ghanaian politics with a sad note on Monday, July 7, 2025, when news spread very fast that the powerhouse was dead. He was aged 40 years.
Kumi, who was voted into office in the 2024 general elections on the platform of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), died having not finished his (Kumi’s) election petition court battle over the validity of his election.

A communicator of the NPP confirmed his death. The source added that Ernest Kumi was in a hospital recently, although the family has yet to reveal more details about his death.
To a lot of people, especially those in the Akwatia constituency, the news comes as a shock because Kumi had been on the front line waging a legal battle against his election.
The courtroom drama had seen him on the front pages of newspapers and magazines for months, especially when a Koforidua High Court convicted him of contempt in February 2025.

Ernest Kumi was being charged by the court after he defied an injunction that forbade him to present himself in Parliament to be sworn in. His absence at the court hearings resulted in additional legal consequences after which the conviction was finally overturned.
Nonetheless, Kumi was adamant to serve his constituents and he was trying to clean his name. His sudden death now puts the future of Akwatia parliamentary seat in darkness.
The politicians, members of the parties, and the people of Akwatia have started signing in their condolence and shock on social media. He was a young energetic leader with a bright political future as many described him.
One of the party supporters wrote on Facebook, “this is a massive loss to the NPP and the people of Akwatia.“
At this time as the country grieves, the focus will now be on the Electoral Commission and parliament to show the way forward with regard to the empty seat.
The family and the NPP owe us more details of this in the days ahead including funeral arrangements and official statements.
