Everything you need to know about Mahama’s inauguration

According to the Ministry of Information, the swearing-in ceremony will feature many dignitaries worldwide.

Security Measures for Mahama’s Inauguration

The Ghana Police Service has outlined a comprehensive security plan to ensure the smooth and secure conduct of the inauguration.

In a statement issued on January 6, 2025, the police announced the implementation of stringent security protocols across Accra, particularly focusing on the areas surrounding the swearing-in venue.

Roadblocks, traffic restrictions, and diversions will be in place to manage vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow.

Designated Security Perimeters

The following locations will serve as security operational zones throughout the event:

  • Ako Adjei Interchange
  • AU Roundabout
  • State House
  • Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
  • Accra Sports Stadium
  • Independence (Black Star) Square
  • Ministries Traffic Light
  • Customs Headquarters Traffic Light area
  • Gamel Abdul Nasser Avenue

Road Closures and Traffic Diversions

Key road closures will be enforced from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on January 7, 2025. These include:

  • 28th February Road (from Customs Headquarters towards Castle Road Junction)
  • Lokko Street (from Osu Cemetery Traffic Light towards AU Roundabout)
  • Starlet 91 Road (from Ministries Traffic Light to Accra Sports Stadium)

Traffic diversions will also be in effect to ease congestion and facilitate smooth travel:

  • Motorists from La, Labone, and Osu heading towards the Central Business District (CBD) will be diverted via Salem Avenue to Oxford Street.
  • Vehicles from John Evans Atta Mills High Street heading to Independence Square will be rerouted via Liberia Road at the Customs Headquarters Traffic Light Intersection.
  • Drivers on Lokko Street heading towards Castle Road must use Ajumaku and Oxford Streets.
  • Traffic from the AU Roundabout to Castle Road will be diverted through Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads.

Parking and Public Access

Attendees are advised to utilize designated parking areas, including:

  • The Forecourt of the State House
  • Effua Sutherland Park
  • Ministry of Food and Agriculture premises

Residents within the security zones, as well as other invited dignitaries, are encouraged to follow police directives and use alternative routes where possible.

Parliamentary Swearing-In

In addition to the presidential swearing-in, the police have confirmed arrangements for the swearing-in of newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) and the Speaker of Parliament, which will take place on January 6, 2025, at the Parliament House.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that it is committed to ensuring safety and order during both the inauguration and parliamentary proceedings.

No Drones Allowed at Black Star Square

As part of the heightened security measures for the inauguration, the Ministry of National Security has issued a ban on all private drones in the vicinity of Black Star Square.

The directive, which applies to both recreational and commercial drones, is a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the dignitaries and the public. This measure is in place to prevent any security breaches during the high-profile event.

The swearing-in ceremony is set to be a historic event, and with the deployment of robust security and logistical arrangements, Ghana is preparing for a smooth transition of power, as President-elect John Dramani Mahama takes office alongside Vice President-elect Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
