Carlo Ancelotti says that after Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City from the Champions League quarterfinals, he congratulated Pep Guardiola and wished him luck in the remaining portion of the season.
After making it to the Champions League semifinals on Wednesday, Ancelotti talked with Amazon Prime Video Italia.
“This is a great result obtained with great sacrifice. We defended well, and it was the only way to win here,” said the Italian tactician.

Ancelotti, who was seated quite a distance away from Madrid’s reserves and his staff, watched the penalty shootout from the touchline as Real Madrid prevailed on penalties following a 4–4 draw on aggregate. What was on his mind?
“Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t remember. I hoped we scored and they didn’t. I prefer to isolate myself in these situations,” Ancelotti replied.
The ex-Milan coach had shared a moment with Pep Guardiola on the pitch after the game and revealed what he told the Spanish tactician. “I congratulated him and wished him the best of luck for the rest of the season. They progressed last season, and this time, it was our turn. It was a great feat to win today and I am really happy.”
Ancelotti will meet his former club, Bayern Munich, in the semifinals.
“It’s interesting because it’s the semifinal and it’s particularly good because we beat Manchester City,” concluded Ancelotti.
Real Madrid’s win over Manchester City means Ancelotti has become the first coach to eliminate Pep Guardiola from the Champions League in three different seasons. The Italian tactician remains the only coach to have won Europe’s elite club competition four times.
