A student from the Ashanti Region’s Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) was arrested when a gun was found in his room.
The incident happened on Tuesday, May 14, 2025, as school officials were searching students’ bags during a regular search. During the inspection, the student’s things were checked, and a firearm was found among them.
Officials from the school told the police, who went on to arrest the student. Onua FM states that, in his statement, the student admitted that the gun was not his but belonged to Daniel Owusu Baafi, his stepfather. After making the statement, the police took the stepfather into custody for further questioning.
Police are still holding the student while they investigate the reason for the weapon being on the school campus.

Because of this, people are now worried about students’ safety and the increasing number of firearms in schools. This happened just weeks after a similar incident took place at Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School in Bantama within the Ashanti Region.
In such a situation, a student fired a gun at school, injuring two of their classmates, one of whom suffered a severe head wound.

Many are encouraging tighter security at schools and a more rigorous background check process for individuals allowed to interact with students at home.
The Ghana Education Service has not made an official statement, but it seems that school administrators are teaming up with the police to prevent similar events.
Authorities are urging people not to worry and are promising to investigate the case transparently.
