Manchester United won the Carabao Cup at Wembley with a decisive 2-0 victory over Newcastle, giving them their first trophy since 2017.

Erik ten Hag’s team won because to goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford in quick succession in the first half. The team also displayed outstanding defensive play to limit Newcastle to only two shots on goal.

The Magpies’ 54-year trophy drought continues as they compete in their first final since 1999, when the same opposition defeated them to win the FA Cup.

In the end, this matchup roughly matched the form book: United had won 16 of their previous 20 games and had lost just once; Newcastle had lost six of their previous 10 games.

The Red Devils’ supreme defensive organization was on display when Casemiro headed in Luke Shaw’s free-kick on minute 33, and it appeared that it would be their day from that point forward.

They had one hand on their sixth League Cup five minutes later when Sven Botman diverted Marcus Rashford’s shot past the returning Loris Karius, who may have done better.

A quadruple is still a possibility for United, who advanced to the Europa League round of 32 with victory over Barcelona(opens in new tab) on Thursday and host West Ham in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday. And a first Premier League title in a decade isn’t absolutely out of the question for the 20-time English champions, who trail leaders Arsenal(opens in new tab) by eight points with 14 games to go. For Newcastle, meanwhile, attention turns squarely to their push to secure a top-four finish for the first time since 2003.
