A woman in the Eastern Region of Ghana made headlines after she burnt down her mother’s room after a pastor said her mother was a witch.
It happened in Akyem Apinamang, situated in Denkyembour District, and in a house belonging to Lydia Kyerewaa, who is now being widely criticized.
Someone who saw the accident and those who investigated early on say that Lydia had been encountering serious difficulties in her business. She went to a nearby pastor, seeking direction, and he promised to discover why her misfortunes were happening.
A normal spiritual meeting changed suddenly into something ominous. According to reports, the pastor requested Lydia to purchase products for spiritual cleansing and advice.
In the following session, he declared that Lydia’s mother had caused her problems and was actually a witch trying to stop Lydia from succeeding.
Because of her fear and rage, Lydia is believed to have set fire to her mother’s room, which burnt all the furniture, clothes and personal things inside. Although no one was hurt physically, the mental and emotional impact has broken up the family.

After the event, many people are concerned about how some self-declared spiritual leaders can drive followers into harm, create discord and even cause violence.
“It’s very sad,” said a local resident. “We have given these false prophets too much space to work. Today, words are a major reason why families are torn apart.“
Many people in Ghana using social media are urging stronger control over prophetic ministries and are encouraging authorities to act against the woman and the pastor.
Some people pointed out that accusations of this kind can seriously harm people, mainly when those targeted are emotionally sensitive.
It’s not only a family problem—it’s a problem that affects the whole country, one Twitter user wrote. “It is important to shield our people from being psychologically influenced by prophecies.”
At the moment of writing, Lydia Kyerewaa is not in custody, but authorities are reportedly examining the situation. There is a wish from many that justice is served for the mother whose room was destroyed as well as to discourage dangerous spiritual rituals.
