After a week in custody, EOCO has granted private citizen Bernard Antwi Boasiako, who is also Chairman Wontumi, bail on charges of money laundering.
After days of demonstrations at EOCO by supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he was released on June 2, 2025.
Wontumi was taken into detention on May 27, 2025, because of accusations against him, including money laundering. Even though he was released on bail on May 28, he stayed in custody longer because the bail conditions were not met.
Looking frail caused others to worry. Some people are worried after a video showed the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman looking tired, unable to stand properly and leaning heavily on General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.

Wearing a political suit in burgundy, Wontumi accepted the cheers of his supporters but seemed to be unstable and weak.
The reactions of eyewitnesses and online commentators differed, as some felt sorry for him and wanted him to get better and others felt he might not actually be sick.
Public Reactions
There have been different reactions on social media, including sympathy, humor and some doubts:
Ibrahim Kwadjo Blay: “What’s funny is this is all settings. He doesn’t walk straight like he had a stroke.”

Obour Gyamfi: “Are you certain Wontumi is in good spirits… He should be taken to the hospital for a medical checkup, ohhh.”
Aduanaba Qwaqu Amponsah: “I see he is extremely thin, looks weak and his steps are shaky. I ask God to help him feel stronger and more energetic.”
Meanwhile, the case is still being closely watched by the public and by legal officials as investigations take place.
