Top 10 Tragic Plane Crash in Football History That Left The World in pain

Plane Crash

Though airplanes are very important in football, there are so many cases of plane crashes that have led to the deaths of over 100 footballers across the world.

Footballers or Football teams mostly travel by air and we all know that planes are the best and maybe the only option. But whenever we hear some names of great footballers we remember how plane clashes ended their lives and left the football world in pain.

The following are some of the footballers who have lost their lives through-plane clash:

Argentinian striker, Emiliano Sala was being flown from Nantes, France, to the Welsh capital to join his new club, Cardiff City, on the evening of January 21, 2019, when the single-engine Piper Malibu aircraft plunged into the Channel north of Guernsey in bad weather and crashed. His body was recovered from the seabed 68 meters down.

(2) On the evening of April 27, 1993, a DHC-5 Buffalo transport aircraft of the Zambian Air Force crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Libreville, Gabon. The flight was carrying most of the Zambian national football team to a 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Senegal in Dakar.

(3) Andy Sharmin, a Dutch footballer died at the age of 21 on June 7, 1989, when an airplane he boarded crashed during landing in Surinam’s capital, Paramaribo.

(4) Four years ago, Brazilian football club Chapecoense saw nearly their entire squad wiped out in a devastating plane crash near Medellin, Colombia.

Nineteen Chapecoense players died in the incident, and almost all of the first team and managerial staff were also lost. Fortunately, 3 players survived.

(5) In 1987, a navy plane carrying Peru’s No. 1 soccer team slammed and crashed into the Pacific Ocean upon their return from Pucallpa after beating the local team.

In total, 43 people died (including players, members of the coaching staff, referees, and fans).

(6) In August 1979, FC Pakhtakor Tashkent’s first-team squad was involved in a mid-air collision. A total of 17 players died.

(7) On April 3, 1961, eight players from Chile’s Club de Deportes Green Cross died in a plane crash in the Andes mountain range in South America.

(8) In 1960, eight players for the Danish national team were killed in a plane crash.

(9) British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport in West Germany on February 6, 1958. The aircraft was carrying 44 people, including the Manchester United football team, nicknamed the “Busby Babes,” along with supporters and journalists.

Out of the 23 people, including eight Manchester United players, who died, 21 people survived.

(10) On May 4, 1949, a plane carrying the Torino Serie A soccer team crashed on the outskirts of Turin, Italy, killing all 31 passengers on board. 18 of them are Torino players.
