His company Gruppo Chiarello stated in a statement that he passed away at the age of 61 on Friday, October 6, 2023, at the Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, California, following hospitalization for an allergic reaction that resulted in anaphylactic shock.
“We deeply mourn the loss of our beloved patriarch Michael,” the group said in a statement. “His culinary brilliance, boundless creativity, and unwavering commitment to family were at the core of his being. He brought people together through the joy of shared meals, fostering lasting memories around the table”

Chiarello was the owner of a tapas restaurant named Coqueta and an Italian restaurant named Bottega which has locations in Napa Valley, California, and San Francisco, California.
He also owned NapaStyle in Yountville, which sold a selection of exclusive drinkware, serverware, and designer tabletop pieces but closed on January 4, 2016.
According to his official website, after graduating from The Culinary Institute of America, Chiarello opened his first restaurant, Toby’s, in Miami at the age of 22.
Chiarello made his mark in the culinary world with a unique style that infused the wine-country cuisine of Napa Valley with the traditions of his Southern Italian roots.
