The popular Ghanaian pastor Prophet Kumchacha from Heaven’s Gate Ministries started discussions in the entertainment sector through his demand for gospel musicians to avoid Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).
During his UTV United Showbiz interview on Saturday, May 4, 2025, Prophet Kumchacha criticized how gospel musicians receive treatment during the yearly awards ceremony.
According to him, gospel artists receive inadequate recognition, which demands that they establish their own award ceremonies.
To him, gospel musicians should unite to form their own independent award ceremony instead of being part of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards. He believes gospel artists should build their own prize ceremonies, which would allow them to receive proper recognition.
The religious leader acknowledged prior unsuccessful attempts at gospel-specific awards because gospel musicians failed to provide their backing.

According to him, gospel musicians show insufficient backing for their fellow artistes in the gospel music community. The few gospel music award shows which were launched have failed because performers do not attend these events.
Kumchacha supported the need for money and sponsorship as challenges yet emphasized that gospel musicians must stand together for successful sponsorship to gain recognition.
His remarks emerge during a period when several industry members doubt the TGMA’s impartiality. Fans, along with several artistes, believe gospel music gets insufficient recognition as it receives fewer nominations, performance opportunities and achievement awards than secular musical acts.
The impact of Kumchacha’s request on Gospel music’s genuine transformation remains unclear, but his statement has successfully restarted vital discussions about Gospel music’s position in Ghana’s entertainment industry.
