Well-known Ghanaian social media star KalyJay has made it known that he disagrees with local traders for not lowering prices as the Ghanaian cedi gets stronger against the dollar.

KalyJay shared on Twitter, his real name is Joshua Buernortey Boye-Doe, about how the prices of everyday goods never seem to drop. With the cedi worth about GH¢10 to $1 right now, consumers are hoping prices of commodities will fall too.

“It’s funny to me that you guys are surprised Ghanaians wouldn’t agree to reduce prices. You people tend to forget things quickly. Most people in Ghana are very selfish about their cash,” he tweeted.

He spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic days when hand sanitizer which was priced at GH¢5, suddenly increased to GH¢50. That event, he noted, showed him just how much financial opportunism some traders had.

The way you guys are surprised that Ghanaians don’t want to reduce prices Dey funny me waaa. U people lowkey get short memories. The average Ghanaian is wicked when it comes to money. Covid time people were selling 5 cedis sanitizers for 50 cedis. That’s when I knewww

KalyJay’s statement led to a major online uproar. There were those who agreed with him, describing price stability as a product of selfishness.

Some argued instead that the real problem was weak government, bad regulation and unstable economies.

Dr_QuabenA responded: “Then, the government didn’t lead to the rise in prices?” We should let time work its own course.

The disagreement reflects the bigger challenges in Ghana’s economic rebound. Although the currency looks stronger, prices for consumers are generally not dropping quickly enough.

Experts say the main problems are slow shipping, reliance on imported goods and poor enforcement of fair prices. But for KalyJay and many others, the issue is also how people view profits and kindness.

As Ghana works to overcome COVID and stabilize its currency, it is not clear if traders will make any price changes or not.
