An occurrence in Nigeria has created concern in social media after a teacher reported that a female student in his class stopped eating for two days after getting an underwhelming result in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Obanuso Temitope Obanuso, a teacher coaching students on UTME, came out with the emotional experience on his Facebook page. He said that the student, who expected a mark above 300, achieved a greatly disappointing result and stopped eating in protest, demanding a script review.
“It is she who requested me to contact JAMB in the hope that they would recheck her score”.
She insisted that she should be disciplined if after the reassessment the score is confirmed to be less than 300. That’s how confident she appears to be in her abilities,” Obanuso wrote.
He added that this specific incident is but one of the constant problems. He reports that he has heard innumerable complaints from parents and students of shared concerns.
He said that among his top scorers, those who were scoring higher than 270 consistently were sent results this year ranging from 123-132.

He challenged the widespread assumption that there is widespread failure in the UTME due to lack of adequate student preparation.
The students should not be blamed entirely, which is unjust.
Nigerian students are intelligent in a remarkable way. He commented that even with international examples, social media and distraction is widespread.
Let us see the success Nigerian students gain in international events”.
The post has led to a national debate around the validity of this year’s UTME scores, students’ mental load, and the need to provide schools the tools to take care of students’ mental health.

His fears have attracted support from users of social media, who urged JAMB to handle the case by clarifying the results and providing the opportunity for disputed marks to be reviewed.
