I think we should have a broader conversation on Free SHS 1st — Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Free SHS

The Free SHS program has called a for deep discussion by  President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo claimed that influential Ghanaians oppose the Free SHS policy despite the program’s advantages.

Speaking to the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) leadership, Nana Addo stated that the Education Ministry is examining the difficulties in order to determine a policy direction moving forward.

He said, “One of the things people have been asking for is the revision of Free SHS. I believe we should have a bigger discussion about the influence of education on our national growth.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo implemented Ghana’s Free SHS program in September 2017 for both boarding and day students.

Calls for a review of the policy by the same authorities cannot be politically motivated, given it has already garnered widespread praise from experts and industry players.

The Free SHS Policy

Many Ghanaians have called for a reevaluation of the government’s Free SHS program so that it may shift some of the financial responsibilities back to parents without lowering standards.

Prior to this, Prof. Kwasi Opoku Amankwah, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), also called for a reexamination of the policy.

Some school principals have even threatened to shut down their institutions because of the severe food crisis that has recently affected SHSs.

This has increased the pressure for a review, but the administration maintains its position that things are OK as they are.
