Trent seals qualification for England in a keenly contested quarter final battle against Switzerland
Liverpool defender Trent Alexander Arnold’s penalty kick proved decisive for England as they qualify to the semi final of the ongoing Euros ahead of Switzerland. England was a pre tournament favorite for many football loving fans but have failed to live up to expectation.
The Three Lions won their first game of the tournament by a goal to nil against Serbia only for them to go two games without a win. Coach Gareth Southgate has been under huge criticism by fans and football pundits.
England started the game in high spirits with their big players coming to the party. Attacks from Bukayo Saka and Bellingham proved much for the Swiss defense to handle as they gave away couple of freekicks.
After a goalless first half, the Swiss took the lead through Breel Embolo’s 75th minute goal. Shortly after the Swiss goal, Bukayo Saka scored a cracker to bring the Three Lions back into the game on the 80th minute.
A couple of missed chances in the extra time from both sides sent the game to penalty shootouts. Gareth Southgate’s men scored all 5 from the spot with Trent Alexander Arnold scoring the winner to send England to the semi-final of the tournament.
England qualifies to the next stage of the competition by beating Switzerland 5:2 on penalties.
Despite missing out on a place in the past 4, Switzerland will surely be proud of their performance in the tournament after eliminating the defending champions Italy in the round of 16.
