Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood were the only preschool-aged programs available at the time, but they catered to a wider age range than only toddlers. Patrick’s attention span at the time was limited to a “Wee Sing” video.

This led Sheryl Leach to create a show on her own. Her first impression was the observation of kids carrying cuddly security items like blankets and teddy bears.

Leach thought the concept of a talking bear and blanket interacting with kids was cool, but the blanket idea was too difficult to execute. After attending a Science Place exhibit, her kid developed an interest in dinosaurs, leading to the eventual abandonment of the bear idea.
