Michael Owusu Addo (born July 10, 1985), better known as Sarkodie, is a Ghanaian hip hop recording artist and entrepreneur living in Tema.
He won the Best International Act: Africa category at the 2012 BET Awards, and he was nominated for the same honor at the 2014 BET Awards. Sarkodie was named the 19th most influential Ghanaian by e.tv Ghana in 2015.
He is widely considered as a key proponent of the Azonto dance and genre. Sarkodie is widely recognized as one of Africa’s most important hip hop artists.
MTV Base ranked him sixth on their list of the “Hottest African MCs” in 2014. In 2013, he was ranked first on Lynx TV’s list of the “Top 10 Ghanaian Rappers of All Time.”
In 2015, AfricaRanking.com ranked him third among the “Top 10 African Rappers of 2015.” In 2015, The Guardian called him one of the top five hip hop acts on the African continent.
Sarkodie is the fourth of five children born to his mother, Maame Aggrey, in Tema, Ghana. Sarkodie began rapping as a child and continues to do so throughout his education. His alma mater was Tema Methodist Senior High School.
He received a graphic design degree from IPMC. Sarkodie began his music career as an underground rapper. He competed in Kasahare Level, a popular Adom FM rap competition, and met his former manager Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment through rap bouts.
