Otto Addo on why he benched the local player in Ghana’s 3-0 win over Madagascar

Otto Addo opens up on why the local players in the Black Stars did feature against Madagascar

The Black Stars of Ghana began their 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar on Wednesday, 1st June 2022 in Cape Coast. Otto Addo lined up a strong squad against Madagascar as he looked set for his first victory as the Black Stars coach.

The game saw Mubarak Wakaso play in Ghanaian colours after missing out on the WCQ against Nigeria in March.

Felix Afena Gyan and Osman Bukari scored their Black Stars debut goals as newcomer Antoine Semenyo also made his debut on the 75th minute.

Meanwhile, in the second half while Ghana was in the driving seat, many thought that local players like Okrah and Barnieh will be given the chance to have some minutes for the Black Stars but this was not so.

After the match, Addo was questioned on his decision not to give any of the local boys the chance to play and he had this to say;

“For me, it’s not about local or not local, I don’t care. Whether you’re from Tamale or from Cape Coast it’s about performance and quality, this is the way I decide,” he said.
“When I see a player, especially in training or when I watch video clips or visit matches, this is what I look at. The players who started deserved to start.”

All three local boys Okrah, Korsah and Barnieh have been excluded from the team travelling to play against the Central African Republic on Sunday.
