KNUST Student Jailed for 10 Years After Robbing Hairdresser of iPhone
Fatawu Amponsah, a second-year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was jailed 10 years after he robbed a hairdresser of her mobile phone.
The Asante Akropong Circuit Court, on the Atwima Nwabiagya North District in the Ashanti Region, convicted the 25-year-old student who was a bus conductor.
Court reports indicate that the assault, the KNUST student happened on the night of June 16, 2025, after the victim, a hairdresser in the area, had gone out and was walking home in Abuakwa.
Amponsah abruptly came out and took a knife, threatening her to give him her iPhone 11. He beat the victim after she resisted and took the phone forcefully and ran away.
Her loud screams, however, drew the notice of those around her. A number of individuals pursued Amponsah, and he was finally overpowered and arrested until the arrival of the Abuakwa Police to assume control of the situation.
After being arrested, Amponsah made a caution statement to police officers in which he accepted responsibility for the offence.

He was subsequently accused of robbery and he appeared before court. He accepted responsibility in court where he pleaded guilty during the hearing and after that, the court issued him a 10-year jail term after considering evidence.
The decision has drawn debates on social media and college forums, with most condemning the student over his actions and the severe penalty he is about to face.
One of the members of staff at KNUST, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added, “It is heartbreaking. This was a person who had a future in front of him. He made one wrong choice and his life is never going to be the same.”
Others have demanded additional provisions of struggling students and awareness of legal repercussions to the youth.
Though justice was done to the victim, the case remains a wake-up call because of how a single act of desperation or a foolish decision could impact the course of your life.
As the academic community ponders over the incident, there are some hopes that this will encourage other students to find assistance when they are in trouble- not to get involved in crime.
