Glen Johnson throws light on why Liverpool need to make new signings
Liverpool Football Club former full-back Glen Johnson has called on the Reds to make some transfers this summer to refresh Arne Slot’s squad. Liverpool missed out on the English Premier League trophy in the latter part of the season as their midfield woes resurrected when they least expected it.
The Reds squad depth has always been questioned as they mostly rely on Academy players as back ups to the main players in the team.
“Liverpool need to make some signings,” he says. “This window feels like last year – they never go out and panic buy or come out of the traps and buy five or six players.
“They’re always calm and calculated, and I’m sure they have a shortlist of who they want to get. They need to sign a few players to refresh and replace a few old legs, and although it sounds quiet on the outside, I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of work going on behind the scenes.”
Asked about Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, Glen Johnson added: “I like Gordon as a player, but whether he is a replacement for Mo Salah, I’m not sure – they’re different types of players.
“I like him as a player – he’s direct, he can get some assists and obviously goals too. The problem is that if he can’t play down the middle, I don’t think he’ll be ahead of Luis DÃaz. Liverpool need players though, and if they can get him for a good deal, they should try and sign him.”
