
France won 4:2 on penalties against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal as Joao Felix missed a decisive penalty.
The search for the second semi final spot was keenly contested between Portugal and France at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg. With Germany missing out on a semi final place to Spain, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal was eager to advance to the next level of the competition.
With Kilian Mbappe leading the attack for the Blues, they also looked set for a place in the semi final. France had their midfield marshal Ngolo Kante assisted by Camavinga and Tchouameni in midfield as they were entrusted with the duty of stopping the flamboyant Portuguese midfield.
After 90 mins, it ends in a stalemate with limited chances for both sides. France came closest with three clear chances falling to Camavinga, Dembele, and Randal Kolo Muani.
Portugal on the other hand had very little to do in attack as Kante and Saliba limited the supplies from the Portuguese midfield to Cristiano Ronaldo.
It was an exciting end to the extra time as both teams kept attacking each other. It had to take penalties to separate both sides after 120 minutes of football.
Joao Felix missed a crucial penalty for Portugal as Theo Hernandez scored the winning penalty for France as they eased past Portugal on penalties.
Spain will take on France in the semi final for a place in the final.
