The expectation was generated by the qualification for the Qatar 2021 World Cup and after a goalless draw in the first leg against Ghana, the Nigerian authorities had to reinforce security at the Abuja National Stadium, the venue of the second leg.

However, no one took matters into their own hands and were confident that the Nigerian team would use their home advantage to put pressure on their opponents in such a way that they could defeat them.

Nigeria

On the field, Ghana managed to take the lead in the 10th minute with a goal by midfielder Thomas Teye Party, which was a bitter pill to swallow for the home fans.

Forced by the situation, the Nigerian team moved forward and it was defender William Troost-Ekong, a Dutch nationalized Nigerian, who equalized in the 22nd minute.

From then on, it was thought that the Black Eagles would turn the game around, but they found themselves up against a well-organized Ghanaian defense that withstood all the attacks on their goal.

Hell on the pitch

Something that no one imagined was that when the final whistle blew with the score tied on aggregate but giving Ghana a place on the scoreboard on away goals, the crowd, enraged to see their hopes of seeing their national team playing on Arabian soil wither, began to invade the pitch in protest.

In a matter of seconds, the pitch was transformed into a veritable procession, while the Ghanaians remained entrenched in their dressing room waiting for the chaos to subside.
