He was named Big Ten Player of the Year and named to the AP All-America team. The Portland Trail Blazers drafted Swanigan in the 2017 NBA Draft and he was chosen with the 26th overall pick. Although his conviction didn’t directly cause his premature retirement, it may have contributed to his early death. In his tweets, NBA journalists and fellow professional players shared their condolences on Twitter. It’s unclear if his death was a suicide or not.

Caleb Swanigan was born on 18 April 1997 in Indianapolis, Indiana and was one of the top prep players in the class of 2015 by Rivals. His career at Purdue culminated with his selection as a first-round pick by the Trail Blazers. The Portland Trail Blazers later traded him to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Anthony Tolliver, Trevor Ariza and Skal Labissiere. The identity of his wife was not publicly disclosed.

While Rudy Gobert might be a more likely trade candidate, it’s worth considering that a player like Caleb Swanigan would bring a higher return if he were traded for Donovan Mitchell. While his shortcomings in smaller lineups are often criticized, his rebounding and rim protection are still key factors in winning a championship. Despite his physical appearance, he’s still the best defender on the perimeter.
