Biography

On August 10, 1983, Bonnie Maree Piesse was born. At 16, she got a call from Robin Gurland, who was in charge of casting for Attack of the Clones. He wanted her to try out for a part in the movie. She ended up getting the role of Beru Lars, which Shelagh Fraser had played in Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. StarWars.com said on July 7, 2000, that Piesse would play a younger version of Beru in Attack of the Clones. Piesse talked to Beru as if she was a little shy, with the idea that when Luke Skywalker came into her life, she grew up. In September 2000, Piesse and the rest of the crew were in Tunisia filming scenes set on Tatooine.

In the 2005 movie Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Piesse played Beru again. George Lucas filmed a part of a scene in which a stand-in for Obi-Wan Kenobi gives baby Luke to Joel Edgerton’s character, Owen Lars. In September 2003, when Lucas was filming Episode III, Ewan McGregor gave the baby to Piesse while Owen was played by a stand-in. Edgerton would be filmed and added to the movie almost a year later. Lucas made this change because “he thought Luke would be better off with a woman.” In an interview, Piesse said that her part in Star Wars had helped her career “a lot.”

“So it’s easier to fit some roles than others. And this one was so easy to play that I didn’t feel like I had to try too hard. The main thing I did to get ready was just be myself. After all I’d been through, I was still getting over PTSD. So I did a lot to heal, feed, and strengthen myself so that I could be on set with all the energy I needed. So it was more about getting by on my own.”

Piesse loved seeing what the new Star Wars was like, and she loved Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Piesse started to like Star Wars and learn more about the franchise after she spent many years meeting fans and hearing what Star Wars meant to them. Piesse has said that Star Wars means a lot more to her now than it did before, and that she “kind of became a fan in a whole new way.”
