What is the Ballon d’Or about?
Since 1956, the French magazine France Football has given out the Ballon d’Or every year to the player who was thought to have done the best during the previous campaign.
The Ballon d’Or was created by sports writers Gabriel Hanot and Jacques Ferran, and until 2006, it was determined solely by football journalists’ votes. Originally called as the European Footballer of the Year award, it was given exclusively to European players. All players of any nationality who have played for European clubs are now eligible to receive the Ballon d’Or, which was extended in 1995.
The award became a global prize in 2007 with all professional footballers from around the world being eligible; additionally, coaches and captains of national teams were also given the right to vote, before reverting to just journalists in 2016.
